It looks like the game is coming along nicely. From what I understand Raiders are supposed to be a vanguard to identify and soften enemies for more solid and lethal units like lancer cavalry.

You are partially correct - the role of the Raiders is exactly that. However, the units that finish the wounded are the assassins.
Once we have cooperative multiplayer, it could become the case that Chargers (Lancer cavalry) are better at the job.
